REI Member Moment Sale: 2024 Gear Guide

REI Co-op’s sale periods are a great way to score deals on leading outdoor products from some of the best brands in the business. Their Member Moment Sale runs from March 15-25 this year and comes with two coupons: one for 20% off one full-priced item and one for 20% off any REI Outlet product. Note: A membership is required to take advantage of many of the deals (including the coupons), which costs $30 for a lifetime enrollment and comes with a variety of other benefits, including discounts on shop services and rentals, the ability to buy and trade used gear, and much more. Below we outline the dates and details of the sale, our favorite discounted and early-access items, a few recommendations for your 20% off coupon, and how to shop both in-store and online.

Importantly, many of the deals and all of the early-access products are only available to members—a lifetime membership to the co-op is $30—and we call them out where applicable below. REI Co-op Skyward 4 and Skyward 6 Camping Tents: 50% Off (Members Only)

Tents are the most expensive investment for a lot of campers, making REI’s significant discount on their Skyward collection (including both the 4P and 6P capacities) hard to beat. Highlights include a standing-height interior that makes it easy to move around, near-vertical walls that maximize roominess, and an easy-to-pitch freestanding design. Floor area and durability also stack up competitively to much pricier alternatives, and we love the large awning for hanging out on sunny days (it can also be rolled up partway in mild conditions). All in all, the Skyward is a well-made and highly livable design at a truly standout price during the sale: $187 for the Skyward 4 and $225 for the Skyward 6 (footprints sold separately).

The North Face Men’s Canyonlands and Women’s Canyonlands Hoodie : 30% Off (Members Only)

The North Face excels in certain categories, one of which is fleece jackets. Part of their extensive Canyonlands collection, the Canyonlands Fleece Hoodie is a popular piece among outdoor adventurers of all types, from hikers and campers to downhill skiers. The midweight design offers a versatile amount of warmth (great for shoulder seasons and mild-weather days on the slopes), boasts practical storage and features for both everyday and outdoor wear, and has a very soft and comfortable interior. Finally, we like the classy—albeit small—colorway selection and nice range of sizes to choose from (from S to 3X for men and XS to 3X for women). If you’re planning to primarily wear the jacket as a midlayer, it might be worth saving a little cash with the non-hooded Canyonlands Full-Zip Jacket (too many hoods can cause unnecessary bulk and restriction to movement).

Co-op Cycles Kids’ Bikes: 30% Off (Members Only)

For getting your little one comfortable on two wheels, REI’s in-house lineup (under the name Co-op Cycles) makes it easy to get started without breaking the bank. All of their kids’ bikes are discounted through March 25, from the REV 12 Balance Bike for children under 60 pounds to the REV DRT 24 mountain bike for aspiring shredders. Like many of their adult bikes, REI’s kids’ models are made with quality components from reputable names like Shimano and Tektro. They’re generally also great values, even at full MSRP. Nemo Moonlite Elite Reclining Chair: Early Access (Members Only)

Nemo’s Moonlite camping chair was quick to win us over for its excellent all-around performance at a low weight (2 lb 2 oz), but backpackers will almost certainly want something even lighter. Enter the new Moonlite Elite, which retains a lot of what we love about the original model—including great comfort and overall quality—for a substantial 12 ounces less. The innovative tensioning system is very well executed and allows you to sit forward or lean back by pinching and sliding the clasps at either side, and the aluminum frame and seamless mesh seat give the chair a high-end look and feel. We’re also big fans of the carrying case, which doubles as a platform on soft surfaces like sand. All in all, it’s a fun and very thoughtful design for those who want to minimize weight and packed size without eschewing all creature comforts.

On Men’s Cloudhorizon and Women’s Cloudhorizon: Early Access (Members Only)

Best known for their distinctive outsole design, running brand On is a relative newcomer to the hiking market with a small but growing selection of trail-ready designs. Their latest offering is the Cloudhorizon, which takes a comfort-first approach as the brand’s most cushioned hiking shoe to date. We admittedly haven’t gotten a chance to try it for ourselves yet, but the design bears a lot of similarities to On’s Cloudwander hiking shoe that we tested last year, including a tacky Missiongrip outsole and TPU reinforcements to stave off wear. Our main complaint with the Cloudwander was its stiff feel, but the Cloudhorizon is designed to have a noticeably more forgiving and flexible ride—great for transitioning between around-town and light trail use. It’s also available in a waterproof version for $20 more.

A Patagonia classic, the brand’s signature Torrentshell 3L is our current top-rated rain jacket. Its 3-layer H2No construction offers stalwart protection, the clean design wears well just about everywhere, and the price is right at $179 (the 20% off coupon knocks that down to around $144). In addition, the Torrentshell 3L is offered in a range of colors and sizes, and its durable materials have proven to be long-lasting. We’ve found the jacket excels as an around-town and hiking option, and the latest version offers a very competitive sustainability slant with recycled and bluesign-approved materials, bio-based content in the membrane, a PFC-free DWR coating, and certification to the Fair Trade standard. For those in need of insulation, the brand’s Down Sweater is another standout with a healthy dose of high-quality down in a lightweight and good-looking package.

Yeti Tundra 65 Cooler ($280 w/coupon)

Yeti is practically synonymous with hard-sided coolers, and their flagship Tundra remains a popular sight at campgrounds, beaches, and tailgates across the country. All told, these coolers exude quality: Like the rest of the series, the Tundra 65 model (which has a 57.6L capacity with the thick walls) is highly durable with a rotomolded build, well insulated for keeping food and beverages cold for days on end, and has the sleek and streamlined look that Yeti is known for. Yeti didn’t skimp on the details either, including a freezer-quality lid gasket, durable rubber latches, tie-down points for securing to a truck or boat, and a dry goods rack to keep items like produce or sandwiches fresh longer. You certainly pay a steep premium for the quality and performance, but $70 off during the sale is a sizable savings for a Yeti.

Salomon Men’s X Ultra 4 Mid GTX and Women’s X Ultra 4 Mid GTX ($140 w/coupon)

Salomon’s X Ultra is legendary in the world of hiking footwear, and their latest X Ultra 4 Mid GTX offers a standout mix of trail runner-like agility with added support and protection around the ankle. Most boots that weigh under 2 pounds per pair sacrifice some durability or on-trail comfort, but not the X Ultra: It’s light and nimble underfoot, stands up well to long-term abuse, and retains solid stability and grip on everything from steep, loose rock to dirt, mud, and even snow. For fast-moving day hikers and lightweight backpackers, there’s really no question: The X Ultra 4 Mid GTX is the ticket.

If you prefer something a little sturdier for shuttling a heavy pack, Salomon’s Quest 4 is another standout with a sizable boost in all-around protection and support. And for those who don’t need the ankle coverage, the X Ultra 4 is also available in low-top versions with or without waterproofing.

Nemo Roamer Double ($320 w/coupon)

Camping gear has gotten pretty luxurious of late, and Nemo’s Roamer Double two-person sleeping mat is a case in point. In sum, the Roamer combines the dimensions of a full-size air bed with the cushy comfort of a foam self-inflating pad. The 4-inch-thick cushioning nicely isolates you from the cold and hard ground below, the pad is well insulated for year-round use with an R-value of 6, and the intuitive double-valve system makes inflation and deflation pretty painless. As we’ve come to expect from Nemo, overall build quality is also excellent with quality fabrics and materials throughout. It’s a sizable investment at $400 MSRP (and $250 for the single-person Roamer), but this is a great time to save some serious cash.

Other Details on the REI Co-op Member Moment Sale

As we covered above, REI’s Member Moment Sale runs from March 15 through 25 this year, and there are a few ways to shop. If you live near a brick-and-mortar REI, you can shop in store. This is a great way to try on gear and clothing in person and make sure you’re getting the right fit. If an item is not in stock at your store, a sales representative can place the order for you online—you’ll have the option of picking it up in store or having it shipped to your home address. Alternatively, you can go online and make your purchases either on REI.com or through the REI Outlet. Shipping is free on orders over $50 (members get free shipping regardless of the total), and you also have the option of sending your order to your local store for free pickup. However you choose to shop, all items are covered by REI’s 100% Satisfaction Guarantee and can be returned either by mail or in store within one year of purchase for members (non-members have a 90-day return window).

In addition to discounting gear by up to 50% and allowing members early access to certain products, REI is providing each member with two 20%-off coupons: One provides a discount on a full-price item (with some exclusions) and the other can be used at the REI Outlet (online only).
