Smartwool has been the industry leader in baselayers for years, and merino wool is the most sought-after material for the job. Made with 100% merino (many baselayers are blends or synthetics), the Classic Thermal 1/4 Zip is the whole package: It’s warm, super soft against the skin, wicks moisture, and doesn’t hold stink like polyester alternatives. La Sportiva is one of the biggest names in outdoor footwear, and we’ve been consistently impressed by everything from their trail runners to climbing shoes. Their Ultra Raptor II Mid hiking boots are no exception, combining excellent stability and durability in an impressively light and nimble package. These boots are a particularly good match for fast-and-light mountain objectives that involve covering technical ground: Protection is good thanks to the generous toe cap and thick TPU reinforcements, and the stiff FriXion outsole provides reliable grip on everything from dry singletrack to rocky alpine terrain. Patagonia Men’s Capilene and Women’s Capilene Cool Daily Shirt: 38-47% Off

Patagonia’s Capilene collection runs the gamut from warm, winter-ready baselayers to thin t-shirts and tanks for summer hiking and backpacking. Black Diamond Guide Gloves: 30% Off

Black Diamond's Guide Gloves are a longtime favorite for those who put a premium on warmth and protection. For insulation, the gloves use a combination of lofty synthetic, wool, and fleece insulation that’s well suited for frigid resort days. They're also built to last with a high attention to detail and quality components throughout, including a proven Gore-Tex insert and generous gauntlet-style cuffs. For reference, our tester’s last pair withstood seven seasons of consistent use and abuse. The Guide Gloves do take time to break in and are overbuilt for mild weather and those who run warm, but they leave little to be desired for frequent resort use and demanding mountain objectives.

REI Co-op Flash 18 Pack: 30% Off

REI Co-op’s Flash line of daypacks has been a mainstay among hikers, travelers, and those on a budget for years, and the outgoing Flash 18 is more competitive than ever (an update is coming for spring 2024). Simplicity wins out here: The Flash is frameless by design, meaning it lacks the rigidity of other daypacks and manages to keep weight extremely low at just 9.5 ounces. It also packs down very small for stuffing into a larger backpack or duffel during travel while offering enough capacity for minimalist outings on the trail. Perhaps most importantly, the Flash costs just $40 (around $28 during the sale) and is well built overall, including the use of recycled and bluesign-approved materials. REI Co-op Norseland Insulated Parka 2.0: 30% Off

For women in the market for a quality winter jacket that won’t break the bank, look no further than REI’s own Norseland Insulated Parka. At just $199 full price and around $140 during the seasonal sale, the parka packs in mid-range 650-fill down, a DWR-coated shell that nicely fends off light moisture, and quality features like a fleece-lined hood, generous side vents that boost mobility and make it easy to regulate temperature, and an insulated storm flap over the front zipper. Most ski bindings fall into either the downhill or alpine touring category, but the innovative Salomon S/Lab Shift MNC is a do-it-all setup that can confidently transition between the resort and backcountry. The key ingredient is the toe piece, which functions like a touring-specific tech binding for uphill travel but converts into a traditional downhill design once you’re in ski mode. As expected from the brand, this non-insulated shell is high on value: For $319 full MSRP and up to 50% off during the seasonal sale, you get Gore-Tex waterproofing, a smooth interior, and valuable features like a powder skirt, pit zips, and seven well-distributed pockets. Another nice touch is the emphasis on sustainability, with a recycled polyester shell and lining, bluesign-approved materials, and Fair Trade certification. This is a great way to try on gear and clothing in person and make sure you’re getting the right fit.
